Chr. belegt ist.<sup id="cite_ref-Bryce98_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Bryce98-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Die Identität des nur in assyrischen <a href="Keilschrift" title="Keilschrift">Keilschrifttexten</a> belegten König Pisiri in der Königsabfolge der <a href="Hieroglyphen-Luwisch" class="mw-redirect" title="Hieroglyphen-Luwisch">luwischen Hieroglypheninschriften</a>, der einheimischen Quellen, zu identifizieren, gestaltet sich schwierig. Keiner der hieroglyphen-luwischen Königsnamen deckt sich mit dem keilschriftlichen Namen Pisiri.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Eine Möglichkeit wäre die Identifizierung mit einem König, der als <a href="Sastura#Der_Sohn_von_Sastura" title="Sastura">Sohn des Sastura</a> bekannt ist, weil sein eigener Name nicht überliefert ist. <a href="Sastura" title="Sastura">Sastura</a> war ein <a href="Wesir" title="Wesir">Wesir</a> des Königs <a href="Kamani_(Karkemi%C5%A1)" title="Kamani (Karkemiš)">Kamani</a>. Es ist nicht bekannt, ob er selbst König wurde, bevor sein Sohn den Thron bestieg. Da der Name des Sohnes von Sastura teilweise aber auch als Astiru II. rekonstruiert wird, ist es möglich, dass Pisiri nicht identisch mit dem Sohn des Sastura war, sondern einer seiner Nachfolger, vielleicht der unmittelbare.<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Einige Skulpturen mit verunstalteten hieroglyphen-luwischen Inschriften werden jedenfalls Pisiri zugeordnet.<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Im Jahr 738 v. Chr. führte der <a href="Liste_der_assyrischen_K%C3%B6nige" title="Liste der assyrischen Könige">assyrische König</a> <a href="Tiglat-pileser_III." class="mw-redirect" title="Tiglat-pileser III.">Tiglat-pileser III.</a> Pisiri von Karkemiš als einen der westlichen Könige auf, die ihm tributpflichtig waren. Es scheint, dass Karkemiš unter Pisiris Vorgängern unabhängig von <a href="Assyrien" title="Assyrien">Assyrien</a> gewesen ist und erst unter Pisiris Regierung durch Tiglat-pileser III. in den Machtbereich des <a href="Assyrisches_Reich" title="Assyrisches Reich">assyrischen Reiches</a> geriet.<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Im Jahr 717 v. Chr. nahm Pisiri, der bis dahin loyaler Vasall des assyrischen Reiches gewesen war<sup id="cite_ref-Bryce98_1-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Bryce98-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>, heimlich Kontakt zu Mita, dem König der <a href="Mu%C5%A1ki" title="Muški">Muški</a>, (vermutlich <a href="Midas" title="Midas">Midas</a>, König der <a href="Phryger" title="Phryger">Phryger</a>) auf. Die genaue Botschaft der Nachricht ist nicht bekannt<sup id="cite_ref-Bryce280_6-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Bryce280-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>, geschweige denn, ob die konspirativen Tätigkeiten wirklich der Bildung einer antiassyrischen Allianz dienten, wie in assyrischen Quellen behauptet.<sup id="cite_ref-Bryce98_1-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Bryce98-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Als der assyrische König <a href="Sargon_II." class="mw-redirect" title="Sargon II.">Sargon II.</a> davon erfuhr, fürchtete er, dass Karkemiš und in dessen Gefolge auch andere assyrische Vasallenstaaten westlich des <a href="Euphrat" title="Euphrat">Euphrats</a> der assyrischen Kontrolle entgleiten und unter phrygische Oberherrschaft geraten könnten. Außerdem bahnte sich eine Allianz zwischen Mita von Muški und <a href="Rusa_I." title="Rusa I.">Rusa I.</a> von <a href="Urartu" class="mw-redirect" title="Urartu">Urartu</a>, einem anderen gefährlichen Gegner der Assyrer, an, was nicht nur einen Kontrollverlust für die südmittelanatolischen Gebiete unter assyrischer Herrschaft zur Folge gehabt hätte, sondern gar den Kontrollverlust im gesamten östlichen <a href="Anatolien" class="mw-redirect" title="Anatolien">Anatolien</a> und nördlichen <a href="Mesopotamien" title="Mesopotamien">Mesopotamien</a> bedeuten konnte. Um das zu verhindern und ein Exempel zu statuieren, zog Sargon II. gegen Karkemiš. Er belagerte die gleichnamige Hauptstadt, eroberte und plünderte sie. König Pisiri, seine Familie und die führenden Höflinge wurden nach Assyrien deportiert. Über Pisiris weiteres Schicksal ist nichts bekannt, aber es kann als wahrscheinlich angesehen werden, dass er hingerichtet wurde. Karkemiš wurde in eine Provinz umgewandelt und kam so unter direkte assyrische Herrschaft. Die Einwohner des <a href="Neo-hethitische_Staaten" title="Neo-hethitische Staaten">neo-hethitischen</a> Staates wurden nach Assyrien deportiert, seine Kavallerie, Streitwagentruppe und Infanterie der assyrischen Armee einverleibt und Karkemiš selbst von assyrischen Siedlern neu besiedelt.<sup id="cite_ref-Bryce280_6-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Bryce280-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

</p><p><b><sup>1</sup>:</b> Bei Tuwarsai ist die genaue Position im Stammbaum etwas unklar. Er könnte sowohl der Sohn des Astiruwa als auch der Sohn des Kamani sein, was ihn im letzteren Falle zu einem Enkel des Astiruwa machen würde. Es besteht allerdings auch die Möglichkeit, dass Tuwarsai keineswegs dem Haus von Astiruwa angehört, sondern der Sohn des Regenten Yariri ist.

</p><p><b><sup>2</sup>:</b> Der Fakt, dass der Sohn von Sastura der nächste zweifelsfrei belegte König von Karkemiš nach Kamani ist, macht es wahrscheinlich, dass auch Sastura selbst dem Haus von Astiruwa angehört. Die wahrscheinlichsten Erklärungen sind, dass Sastura ein Adoptivsohn, Schwiegersohn oder Neffe von Kamani ist. Alle drei Möglichkeiten würden ihn in die dynastische Linie bringen.

</p><p><b><sup>3</sup>:</b> Der Name des Sohnes von Sastura ist nicht überliefert. Daher werden mehrere Möglichkeiten seiner Identität in Betracht gezogen. Eine Möglichkeit ist, dass der Sohn von Sastura mit dem Pisiri der assyrischen Quellen identisch ist. Die andere Möglichkeit ist, dass der Sohn des Sastura einem aus einer fragmentarischen Inschrift hypothetisch rekonstruierten Astiru II. entspricht, welcher dann wahrscheinlich nicht mit Pisiri identisch ist. Das würde dann bedeuten, dass Pisiri ein Nachfolger von Astiru II. ist, vielleicht der unmittelbare Nachfolger.
